When exposed to light certain semi‐conducting materials such as TiO2 and other ‘photocatalysts’ trigger or accelerate chemical reactions resulting, for example, in a decomposition of organic molecules. Due to their large surface area, nanosized materials show a significantly enhanced reactivity compared to larger particles or bulk material. Applications can be found e.g. in water treatment and cleaning, air purification and destruction of warfare agents.
