Metrology & Sensing

In this section we will focus on applications of photonics and manipulation of light for sensing and metrology. Due to the interaction of light with structures, several phenomena such as heating/cooling, pressure, absorption and emission can occur. These phenomena can be extremely sensitive and are widely used nowadays for sensing and metrology applications. Present and future applications of photonics in sensing will be discussed. Furthermore, sensing is also used in metrology applications such as adaptive optics where light that has been deformed because of turbulences is actively corrected using special deformable mirrors. As a consequence, one can obtain sharper images even in a non-uniform environment.
